BRAND PARTNER: Esse
A well-loved piece - this camisole can be worn both ways, with the subtle double-layered v-neckline in the back or front. The slender straps and lustrous sheen on this fabric lend divine little details to our cami. An enduring essential that can be worn multiple ways, the easy fit and soft feel ensure this design is the definition of versatile.
Fabrics Esse's garments are made from sustainable materials as well as rescued dead-stock fabrics. Their criteria:
1. The fibre is a natural plant-based fibre that is biodegradable, renewable or has a potential for circularity.
2. If the natural fibre is environmentally or socially intensive - it is only used when it has been certified, e.g. Organic Cotton
3. Recycled fibres or upcycled textiles - synthetic fibres from these sources may be occasionally used to reduce their environmental impact
Some of the linens Esse use are OEKO-TEX certified, ensuring that hazardous chemicals in dyed fabric (e.g. carcinogens, azo-dyes and other chemicals) are not present.
Design Esse is committed to developing thoughtful and innovative designs that are functional and that minimise textile waste. All other textile scraps get salvaged and used in our OFFCUTS capsule.
Packaging Esse's packaging is plastic-free and made from 100% recycled paper products. They opt for packaging with minimal to no branding so that the packaging can be reused. The plastic packaging that their garments get stored in are reused at least 5-6 times. Esse has also embarked on a trial with Package Pals to make their packaging more circular. From July - September 2020, Package Pals will collect all used Esse packaging and send them back to Esse to check, clean and redistribute for reuse.
By selecting their partners through a stringent process and putting in place a Partners' Guide for their partners to adhere to, Esse ensures that they remain true to their values. As small businesses, their partners may not have had the relevant accreditations certifying a safe workplace and fairtrade practices. However, Esse visits often to ensure that the workers at their partner factories work in a safe environment and receive benefits like guaranteed minimum wage, paid holiday leave, sick pay and overtime pay. Most of the workers have been at their partner factories’ for over 2 years. You can learn more about their makers based in Ho Chi Minh City and Chiang Mai on their website.
